2012 Pros and Cons

(+) Roddy led the league in targets with 179 and has been in first or second in that category the past three years (1st in ’10, 2nd in ’09)

(+) Second straight 100-reception season

(+) Atlanta is headed towards more passing and less rushing this year

(+) Roddy had 1,296 receiving yards, the third-most of his career and fifth straight 1,000-yard season

(+) PPR machine – put up at least six catches in nine games and had double-digit receptions three times

(+) Five 100-yard games, with the lowest total being a 120-yard outing vs. Vikings

(+) We fully expect Matt Ryan to become one of the elite fantasy football QBs this season

(+) Could be the best pure route runner in the league and usually snags everything thrown his way

(–) A healthy and full off-seasoned Julio Jones most likely eats into some of his targets

(–) His longest reception in 2007 went for 69 yards, 2008 equaled 70 yards, 2009 was 90 yards, 2010 was 46 yards and now last year’s was 43 yards. With Julio now the deep threat on the team, Roddy’s YPC is not heading in the right direction

(–) Tony Gonzalez is playing so well—even at such an old age—that he’s eating into Roddy's TD production

2009 Review

watch out for roddy white

It’s official.  Roddy White has secured himself as one of the best receivers in the game and can now be considered a #1 fantasy wideout for your team.  He scored touchdowns in over half his games and was targeted by Matt Ryan (along with Chris Redman) a whopping 165 times on the year.  Despite Roddy having already signed his huge contract before the season started, and despite the loss of stud RB Michael Turner in the middle of the year, he was completely undeterred in putting up some seriously eye-catching numbers by seasons end.  2009 marked the third year in a row he exceeded 80 catches and 1,150 yards while also upping his TD count each year in the process.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

With Matt Ryan and Michael Turner coming back fully healthy in 2010, Roddy White should have no problem repeating, and likely out-performing, his 2009 numbers.  Tony Gonzalez will be back for another year to take the double-teams away from White, and with Turner running at full-speed again, the safeties won’t be able to stay back and crowd Roddy’s deep space.  White is in the prime of his career right now, so if QB Matt Ryan can take another leap forward in his junior year, expect White to reap the #1 fantasy WR benefits.

~ A better receiver than Michael Jenkins would be nice to take a little more heat off of White

~ Michael Turner will be healthy, so defenses won’t be able to key in on White

~ Matt Ryan will have another year under his belt

Injury Report

Roddy has not missed a game in his five-year career

Roddy White said he will not take a pay cut to remain with the Falcons.

Pyro's take: "I'm not interested in taking a pay cut," White told ESPN on Monday afternoon.

White, who is signed through 2017, is due $4.25 million next season and would count $6,043,750 against the salary cap. The Falcons could reduce the $4.25 million in cash due ($2.75 million base salary and $1.5 million roster bonus) and give him a chance to make it up in incentives.--Vaughn McClure

White caught 43 passes for 506 yards and a touchdown despite playing every game in 2015, and he has not had a 1,000-yard season since 2012. It will be a tough sale for White to remain a Falcon if he doesn't take a cut in pay.

Roddy White (ankle) missed Wednesday’s practice.

Pyro's take: White is coming off a solid game, and he will play, just dont expect the same results.

Roddy White caught 3-of-4 targets for 23 yards and a touchdown

Pyro's take: Roddy White finally got involved in the passing game and he made it pay off. All four of White's targets came in the first half.

He was still ended up getting out-targeted and out-gained by Leonard Hankerson.

White could be either the third, fourth, or even fifth receiver on the team right now.

Roddy White will be inactive tonight against the Buccaneers, Harry Douglas will resume his role. White had not practiced all week with a hamstring issue.

Pyro's take: If you own Harry Douglas he would not make a bad play against a poor Tampa Bay defense.

Still not practicing

Roddy White missed another session of practice today. Its the hamstring that is bothering him according to ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure. The timing couldnt be worse as the Falcons are getting set to play the Buccaneers on Thursday night.

Pyro's take: Keep an eye on how White responds, and news on his return. Be ready to insert Plan B.

Roddy White hates preseason games

The Falcons had a long night in Houston, losing 32-7 to the Texans and possibly losing left tackle Sam Baker for the entire season.

So what does receiver Roddy White takeaway from that or any other preseason game?

“Nothing,” White told reporters after the game. “You get nothing out of exhibition games except for a lot of peoples conditioning, what shape they are in, and if they are able to go 60 plays or not. You learn how far your young guys have to go, grasping concepts and things you want them to do, but other than that the veterans go out and play. Everybody just tries to get through this thing and try to stay healthy as possible and make it to game one. Like today, our left tackle got hurt and we don’t know if he is going to be ready for the season or not. It’s stuff like that, that tells you a lot about these games. I know you can get hurt at practice but playing unmeaningful games and getting your left tackle hurt, I just don’t know. I don’t know what you judge from these preseason games. I’m not a fan about them, but we have to play them.”

Pyro's take: Well said Roddy. Here's to hoping the NFL and NFLPA can get together on a deal that works out best for all of us.

Four more years!

Before the 4-year $30 million dollar extension, White was set to make a $5 million base salary for the upcoming season.

Before the deal, 10 receivers around the league had higher average per year salaries:

Calvin Johnson, Lions, $16.2 mil
Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals, $16.1 mil
Percy Harvin, Seahawks, $12.8 mil
Mike Wallace, Dolphins, $12 mil
Dwayne Bowe, Chiefs, $11.2 mil
Vincent Jackson, Buccaneers, $11.1 mil
Brandon Marshall, Bears, $10 mil
Andre Johnson, Texans, $9.6 mil
Greg Jennings, Vikings, $9 mil
Victor Cruz, Giants, $8.60 mil
Roddy White, Falcons, $8.5 mil

Pyro's take: The guy deserves it, and will slip big time in fantasy drafts this season. I have a good feeling about his productivity with his health back (he was top 5 down the stretch once he healed up) and Gonzo retiring.

Don't sleep on Roddy!

White arrested for tinted windows

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was arrested in Gwinnett County early Tuesday on a failure to appear warrant, jail records show.

White, whose full name is Sharod Lamar White, was arrested by Gwinnett County police and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail just before 4:30 a.m. He was released about 90 minutes later on $168 bond, according to jail records.

White allegedly failed to appear in court on a traffic charge. The Gwinnett sheriff’s website shows an outstanding warrant for White on a charge of “non-transparent material on windows.”

Pyro's take: This is not the start to the off-season Roddy was looking for. The good news is he is already being targeted in 2014. I also think it would be wise for White to take a lesson from RUN-DMC's "It's Tricky".

White has banged up knee, but ready to roll

Roddy White, who has battled injuries all season, seemed unconcerned after a knee issue surfaced this week.

White said he simply bruised his left knee in last Sunday's 22-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers. It caused him to be limited in practice this week.

"I fell the other day. Well, I didn't fall … I got pushed out of bounds and I landed right on it," White explained. "And it swelled up a little bit. But I'm good to go. I'm fine."

White said the knee shouldn't hold him back as he prepares to face the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

"No, no, it's not going to," White said. "Yeah, I'll be able to play (fast). No doubt about it."

Pyro's take: White has a tasty match-up with the Redskins this week, and I expect him to take advantage of it.

Over the past two weeks Roddy has begun to look more like his old self with 24 targets for 18 catches and 217 yards. He will be just fine this week, and has a good chance to find the endzone for the first time in four weeks.

Roddy could miss extended time

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White (ankle, hamstring) was injured in the fourth quarter of the team's loss to the New York Jets on Monday Night Football in Week 5. The Falcons have a bye in Week 6, but it is possible that White could miss games in the weeks after that, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Pyro's take: The best way to describe what is happening in Atlanta right now would be in the words of Col. Sanders from Spaceballs: "She has gone from suck to blow!"

Julio Jones is out for the season and now Roddy White has injured himself again, and now could miss the next few games following their bye this week. So what does this mean in terms of fantasy? It means OY VEY!!!

Matt Ryan has just lost 2 pro bowl receivers on the same day. So when the Falcons do hit the field again it will be Harry Douglas lining up as the #1 and Drew Davis lining up as the #2. Needless to say Ryan is not going to give owners the points they need with his top 2 weapons gone.

This could be good news for Steven Jackson, if he ever returns, as the Falcons should try to lean on the running game while White is out.

Roddy White still not 100%

In his quest to become 100 percent healthy from a high right ankle sprain, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White suffered a set back after playing extensively against New England.

He played his most action of the season against New England. He played 74 of 76 (97 percent) of the offensive snaps.

“Yeah, and I learned a very valuable lesson from that,” White said. “I ain’t where I need to be yet.”

Asked if he was 100 percent, White said, “I don’t know. I’ll tell you after the bye week.”

Pyro's take: This is troubling news for White owners as they would rather him just miss a game or two and come back 100%, instead of gutting it out and hurting his fantasy production. It looks like this may be another tough week for Roddy and that is just not the news we were looking for.

Roddy White to gut it out

Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports that White said Friday that he still isn’t where he wants to be in his recovery from the injury, but will once again “gut it out” against the Patriots on Sunday night. McClure adds that White also said that he’ll rest up during the team’s bye week, which comes after they host the Jets in Week Five.

Pyro's take: Roddy has been dealing with a high ankle sprain and he has not been able to be the player we are used to seeing. White has been used mainly as a decoy so far this season, and the fact that he is admitting he is still not fully recovered from his injury makes him a risky start this week. If you do end up starting him you can take heart in the fact that they should be in a high scoring game against the Patriots.

Roddy White still dealing with a high ankle sprain

Roddy White concedes that he’s not the guy he normally is because of a high ankle sprain suffered during the preseason.

“They wanted me in certain areas to do certain things so that they couldn’t just bracket guys,” White tells D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution...“That’s what we did.”

White was in some respects a decoy. He was on the field, but he was impaired in comparison to what he otherwise can do.

“It’s hard to cut,” White said. “It’s hard to do just about everything at the position.”

Pyro's take: This is rough news for fantasy owners who selected White, and who heard all week long that he was 100% to go against the Saints. White obviously felt bad, and now has come out and said that it is a high ankle sprain he is dealing with.

These are nagging injuries and can sometimes take up to 8 weeks before it is feeling back to normal. This makes starting Roddy White in week 2 a major question mark at this point. We will be closely monitoring his participation in practices this week to determine his value for fantasy owners in week 2, but at this point plan on benching him this week.

Roddy White should be ready for week 1

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said Wednesday he hopes White would be ready for the season opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 8, and coach Mike Smith went a step further. Smith said White will, indeed, be ready for Week 1 and denied whispers that the receiver suffered a dreaded high ankle sprain, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

That lines up with a report from NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, who was told by a source earlier this month that White is dealing with a (less-dreaded) low ankle sprain.

Pyro's take: This is no surprise to us as Roddy is going to be just fine and will have had over 3 weeks to recover from the ankle sprain. White is a pro and knows what it will take to be ready for the Saints and will have a chance to put up big numbers against an improved, but still poor defense.

Roddy White Worked out with Larry Fitzgerald in the offseason

Roddy White spent some of his offseason working with Larry Fitzgerald.

Pyro's take: This is always great news when any receiver goes and works out with Larry Fitzgerald. The fact that a receiver as accomplished as White decided to workout with him this year just shows his dedication to being even better in 2013.

White is a player who is dropping down the rankings in the wide receivers, but this nugget should help to see him moved back up a few slots.

White is a veteran who knows his way around the league, but when a receiver as good as him decides he can be better at this point in his career is a sign that he is not ready to be forgotten in fantasy. In my mind White is still a legitimate WR1, but more towards the back end this season.
