2012 Pros and Cons
(+) Roy Helu showed great potential towards the end of last season in Shanahan’s one-cut running system
(+) Showed a great ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, including a huge 14-catch, 105-yard receiving day in a start against the 49ers
(+) Had a four-game stretch towards the end of the season in which he averaged 24 carries for 97 yards along with four catches for 30 yards (also scored his only two touchdowns of the year during this time)
(+) The running ability of RG3 on bootlegs should help open up more running lanes for Helu
(+) Though a veteran with top-notch blocking abilities, Tim Hightower isn’t much competition for the starting tailback job
(–) That said, word from the Redskins early on is that Hightower will indeed be the starting running back as the year begins
(–) The enigma that is Mike Shanahan often trades his running backs in and out of the lineup (though he does seem to get the most out of each one)
(–) With Helu, Hightower and Evan Royster, the Redskins have a stable of running backs that could be called upon at any time to carry the load
(–) Though a small sample-set, Helu played poorly against teams within the division (Eagles, Giants, Cowboys)
