Sammy Morris

New England Patriots

2009 Fantasy Outlook

Sammy Morris is a career backup who achieved career highs across the board due to Patriot RBs dropping like flies last season.   The backfield in New England is now more crowded than ever with the signing of Fred Taylor.   If you have one of these guys, you sorta need to draft them all, and your league probably does not allow for that many roster spots.  With 20+ carries per game, any RB can be successful in this offensive scheme, but that is typically only possible with multiple injuries.  We can't advocate buying high on any of these guys.   Morris is one of two RBs 32 years of age or older with under 620 carries in his career.  The other is Kevin Faulk.  That should crystallize the New Englad backfield situation for you.  Sammy Morris is a pickup in the '09 draft as he will more than likely be third on the depth chart.   We have him ranked as the 74th RB on our board this summer.

Handcuff

Sammy is the handcuff, but we can't tell to whom.  Between Lawrence Maroney, Fred Taylor, and Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis, there is no clear-cut starter.

Sammy seems fine rolling into 2009. No worries here.

Breaking News

Sammy Morris limited again Wednesday expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

Sammy will likely be limited in practices for the remainder of the year, so don't go worrying about nothing. He'll play this weekend, but is no more than a low-end flex option as Laurence Maroney handles the bulk of the workload.

Sammy Morris a game-time decision again expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) is being listed as questionable on the team's injury report and will likely be a game-time decision again this Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Morris was limited on Friday, so even if he plays, he likely won't be at full strength and will see just a bit of time while Laurence Maroney handles the load. Keep him on your fantasy football bench yet another week.

Sammy Morris likely to be game-time decision again expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) will likely be a game-time decision again after being inactive for last week's game against the Jets.
“It’s only been a couple days,” Morris said. “But I think so. It’s (his knee) about the same. Just take it as it comes, and I’ll know as the week goes.”

Pyro's Take:

Morris would likely split carries at best if he's declared active, which would not only stifle his fantasy football value, but cut into Laurence Maroney's as well. Sit him for at least another week until the Pats figure out what their RB situation is.

Morris questionable and likely game-time decision expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) is being listed as questionable and will likely be a game-time decision to be active on Sunday.

Pyro's Take:

Even if Sammy does play, he'll split time at best with Laurence Maroney and won't be a good fantasy football start for at least another week.

Sammy Morris back at limited practice expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was back at practice in a limited fashion on Wednesday. His status for Sunday is still up in the air.

Pyro's Take:

Morris is slated to come back this week and may even get the start after Laurence Maroney sent himself to the doghouse with a goal-line fumble last week. If he plays, he could be a decent flex for your fantasy football team this week.

Sammy Morris sighting on practice field Friday expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) returned to practice with the team on Friday and is listed as doubtful on the Week 10 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Morris won't be playing on Sunday night, but it's looking like he'll be back for next week's game against the Jets. Slide him up a couple spots on your fantasy football bench.

Still waiting on Sammy Morris' return expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was absent from practice once again on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Even though he's expected to return next week, we have our doubts seeing that he hasn't practiced once since his injury weeks ago and still isn't even giving limited participation. Keep him planted at the end of your fantasy football bench.

Sammy Morris still not practicing expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) missed practice again on Wednesday and is not expected to play Sunday night against the Colts.

Pyro's Take:

Sammy isn't due back until Week 11, so it's no shock that he isn't practicing yet. Continue to keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench for now.

Morris not limping, could be back Week 11 expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was seen in the team's locker room on Monday walking without any discernible limp. He is tentatively scheduled to return to action Week 11 against the Jets.

Pyro's Take:

Too bad he'll miss the game against the Colts next weekend. That one is going to be a doozie... Morris will likely practice at some point this week, but won't be activated for the game. Keep him on your fantasy football bench.

Sammy Morris still inactive, Maroney to start expand +

With running back Sammy Morris still on the sidelines with a knee injury, Laurence Maroney will get the start in the backfield for the Patriots.

Pyro's Take:

Maroney is worth throwing in your fantasy football lineup as a low-end RB2 or flex play against the Dolphins today. Make sure Sammy is on your bench.

Sammy Morris misses practice, again expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was not at practice with the team again on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

When he'll be back, nobody knows. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench.

Sammy Morris still not on the field expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) continues to be missing from practice as he recovers from a knee injury he sustained a couple weeks ago.

Pyro's Take:

Nobody has said much of anything about his injury, so when he's likely to return is anyone's guess. Keep him at the very end of your fantasy football bench for now.

Sammy Morris still not back at practice expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was still missing from practice on Tuesday.

Pyro's Take:

The Pats have been trying out a few running backs lately (for backup purposes), so it doesn't look good for Morris in at least Week 9. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench for now.

Sammy Morris still not practicing expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) was still not practicing with the team on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

The team is on a bye this week and resting a bunch of players, so we wouldn't expect the team to be pushing anyone injured into practice. Keep him at the end of your fantasy football bench for the time being.

Sammy Morris inactive as expected expand +

Patriots running back Sammy Morris (knee) is inactive for the game against the Buccaneers in London. Laurence Maroney will take his place and make the start in the backfield.

Pyro's Take:

Maroney could be a good spot-start on your fantasy football team today as the Pats face an awful Tampa Bay rush D. With six teams on bye this week, don't hesitate to go deep on your bench with this one.
