Shonn Greene

New York Jets

2009 Review

shonn greene - high expectatctions

That was quite an impression Shonn Greene made last year, eh?  The Jets grabbed the University of Iowa running back with the first pick in the 3rd round in the hopes that he could be an adequate backup to Thomas Jones should something happen to Leon Washington.  Well, it turned out little Leon went down for the year with a leg injury in the 7th game of the season, so New York was going to find out what they had much sooner than they thought…  By surprise, not only was Shonn up to taking on the primary backup RB job on a winning team, but it seemed like he wanted to take Jones’ starting job as well!  Ultimately, Shonn never did start a game, but his game impressed the coaches so strongly towards the end of the year that he ended up garnering more touches than Thomas Jones did during their playoff run.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

The show Greene put on in the 2009 playoffs was enough for the team to let go of their 1,400-yard, 14-TD running back Thomas Jones, but they haven’t thrown all their chips in on the youngster just yet.  They decided it would be best to trade in one Over-30 guy for another and grabbed surefire Hall-of-Famer LaDainian Tomlinson on the cheap to hedge their bets.  LT21 isn’t the same back he used to be, but with an offensive line like the Jets have, he might just come back to life and turn a few heads.  That doesn’t mean Greene won’t be the main man, because he will, but fantasy owners should get used to seeing LT21 take over on passing downs as Shonn has never been much of a pass-catching threat out of the backfield (1 catch in 2009, 11 catches in 3 years at Iowa).  That said, barring injury (he has had injury problems throughout his career), expect the Jets second-year RB to rush for over 1,000 yards, cash in possibly 10+ TDs, and come close to RB1 fantasy status in 2010.

~ LaDainian Tomlinson is sure to take some opportunities away from Greene, but not enough to affect his overall production

~ The Jets employ BY FAR the most run-happy offense in the NFL

~ Mark Sanchez is still learning what it takes to pass well at this level, so the Jets should still implement a highly run-based offense

~ When Santonio Holmes comes off his suspension, how will that affect the Jets offensive game-plan?

~ The Jets Offensive Line is one of the best in the game, especially at run-blocking

Breaking News

Shonn Greene to pick up Leon's carries expand +

With Leon Washington done for the season with a broken leg, Jets coach Rex Ryan said that the team will have to use several different players to try and replace him, but that rookie RB Shonn Greene will pick up most of Washington’s running duties.

Pyro's Take:

Greene is a special talent with a lot of heart and drive. If he wasn't owned already or hasn't been grabbed off waivers in your fantasy football league, do it immediately. You'll be happy you did.

Shonn Greene tweaks ankle in loss to Saints expand +

Jets rookie running back Shonn Greene injured his ankle in the game against the Saints on Sunday, but coach Rex Ryan thinks he'll Greene "will be fine".

Pyro's Take:

The Jets finally got their third-round pick involved on Sunday, and by the way he ran, it looks like we could be seeing more of him this season. Keep him stashed on your fantasy football bench for now.

Shonn Greene to be inactive again? expand +

New York Jets rookie running back Shonn Greene may be on the sidelines again this week while the coaches try and find the right role for him in their offense.

Pyro's Take:

"When the decision is made for Shonn, we'll try to have a role for him," OC Brian Schottenheimer said. "If Shonn is up and he gets some carries, we'll keep giving him the ball. Hopefully he can get his feet wet and do a couple of good things."
Keep the youngster stashed on your fantasy bench for awhile.

Rookie RB Shonn Greene practices in full again Thursday expand +

New York Jets rookie running back Shonn Greene participated in full at practice again on Thursday after being declared inactive for last week's game against the Texans.

Pyro's Take:

The Jets ran the ball 42 times last week, and Greene will be sure to grab a few of those carries against the Patriots this week. Expect Greene to get the short-yardage and goal-line looks over Thomas Jones on Sunday as well.

Jets rookie RB Shonn Greene inactive expand +

The New York Jets declared rookie running back Shonn Greene inactive for Sunday's game against the Texans.

Pyro's Take:

We thought he would play, but the Jets likely needed someone for special teams, which Greene isn't a part of. Looks like Thomas Jones will get the goal-line and short-yardage work today.

Rookie RB Shonn Greene surprisingly back at practice on Monday expand +

New York Jets rookie RB Shonn Greene was back at practice on Monday despite coach Rex Ryan saying two weeks ago that Greene would miss the remainder of the preseason.

Pyro's Take:

Coaches like to play it safe when speaking to the media, so it's really no surprise that Greene is back sooner than expected. The Jets third-round pick will likely be used in short-yardage situations this year, so don't expect him to play in their final preseason game so as not to re-aggravate the rib injury.

Jets' rookie Shonn Greene to miss rest of pre season expand +

That Rib injury that Greene suffered in the last game is apparently more serious than originally thought as Greene won't see any further action in the pre season.

Pyro's Take:

Greene was merely a short yardage option and not likely to see much action anyway. He is still someone to target late in drafts as a handcuff to TJ.

Jets' rookie RB Greene takes shot to ribs expand +

Shonn Greene ended up on the sidelines after taking a shot to the ribs during Monday night's preseason game against the Ravens.

Pyro's Take:

The injury does not appear to be serious, but it almost doesn't matter. He won't see enough touches to be fantasy relevant. He would need both Leon and TJ to go down to warrant starting - even as a stop-gap. That said, as a last round flier, you could do worse.

Shonn Greene is a legit threat to Thomas Jones's touches expand +

Jets' rookie RB Shonn Greene is challenging Thomas Jones for a larger share of the carries, as Jones was absent from all voluntary off-season activities due to being salty about his contract. Jones did arrive to mandatory camp, and has accepted that his contract is what it is.

Pyro's Take:

Despite their QB woes, the Jets have a strong offensive line and RB Tony Richardson is leading the way for at least one more season. Expect an uptick in carries due to either Sanchez or Clemens under center. If Greene and TJ end up splitting carries with Leon Washington in on 3rd down, there won't be enough to go around. You draft one, you have to draft them all.
