Steve Breaston

Arizona Cardinals

2009 Review

Steve Breaston’s numbers may have taken a noticeable dip from the previous year, but he still had a pretty darn good season when you put it all into perspective.  First of all, he’s not even a starter, so to amass 55 catches for 712 yards and 3 TDs as a #3 guy is actually quite astounding.  Second, he got less playing time because Anquan Boldin only missed one full game in 2009 as compared to four in 2008.  Third, the Cardinals ran more and passed less than the previous year due to the strong play of both Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower, so the opportunities weren’t always there for him to capitalize on.  Overall, we’d have to say that 2009 was another successful year for the three-year pro.

~  Ranked 43rd in the league with 91.6 WR fantasy points (basic scoring system)

~  Tied for 69th in the league with 3 receiving touchdowns

~  Ranked 53rd in the league with 712 receiving yards

~  Ranked 55th in the league with 47.5receiving yards per game

~  Tied for 48th in the league with 55 receptions

~  Ranked 67th in the league with 82 targets

~  Ranked 30th in the league with 12 receptions of 20+ yards

~  Tied for 50th in the league with 33 catches for first downs

~  Ranked 134th in the league with 163 yards after the catch (YAC)

~  Tied career best in receiving TDs (3)

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Ohhhhhh boy.  For those of you waiting to see if Breaston was the real deal or not, now’s your chance.  Stevie will finally have his shot in 2010 to show the NFL world what he’s made of now that the dynamic duo of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin have been split up.  He will immediately be implanted as the starter next to Fitz in Week 1, but the big question heading into the season is… is Matt Leinart up to the task?  The Cards and their WRs fantasy values could be in line for a huge hit with the retirement of Kurt Warner (well, maybe not Fitz so much, as his talent is on a totally different plane than the normal wide receiver), and Breaston might not be able to overcome Leinart’s faults on his own.  In addition, Arizona is likely to employ the run a bit more after seeing what they have in Beanie Wells and knowing Leinart’s faults.  Expect Breaston to put up numbers right in between what he did in 2008 and 2009 with the upside of becoming a decent WR3 start for your fantasy team if all goes well.

~ The loss of Kurt Warner and his accuracy is huge for a guy like Breaston

~ Arizona will likely turn to the run a bunch more with Leinart under center

~ Fellow WR Early Doucet will push Breaston to produce more than anything has in the past

Injury Report

Green

Breaston was listed as Questionable on the Cards' injury report all year due to a knee problem, but missed just one game (the 1st) despite the hoopla

Breaking News

Breaston limited Friday, listed as probable expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited at practice for the third straight day and is listed as probable on the team's Week 11 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Breaston will play as usual, and also as usual, will be a fine WR3 play with upside for your fantasy football team this Sunday.

Breaston limited as usual Wednesday expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited at practice as usual on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

Per usual, Breaston will play on Sunday and is a decent WR3 on your fantasy football team.

Breaston limited as usual expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited as usual at practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

He's fine, he's playing, he's a decent WR3 with Boldin healthy again. 'Nuff said.

Steve Breaston limited Friday as usual expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited as usual on Friday and is listed as probable on the team's Week 9 injury report.

Pyro's Take:

He'll play, but the question is, will he start? Boldin's availability is still up in the air, so check back Sunday to see if Breaston is merely a WR3/flex option or a legit WR2 on your fantasy football team this weekend.

Breaston limited, though may start Sunday expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited as usual on Thursday, but with fellow WR Anquan Boldin hobbled and possibly sitting this weekend, Breaston may be moved into the starting lineup opposite Larry Fitzgerald.

Pyro's Take:

The Third Nipple will play, but the question remains whether he will start or not. Boldin may end up being a game-time decision, so Breaston's value as a WR2 or WR3 on your fantasy football team might not be known until just prior to kickoff. Check back Sunday morning to be sure.

Breaston "probable" on injury report expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited at practice as usual on Friday and is being listed as probable on the team's injury report.

Pyro's Take:

Do coaches put these sorts of things out there (questionable/probable listings) to mess with other coaches, or to mess with fantasy football partakers? Cause really, we all know Breaston is going to play. However, you might want to sit him this week against the No. 1 ranked pass D in the league.

Breaston limited as usual Thursday expand +

Cardinals WR3 Steve Breaston (knee) was limited as usual at practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Such is the life of the Third Nipple... He'll be playing on Sunday and could be used as a WR3 on your fantasy football team if necessary.

Breaston limited as usual expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited as usual in practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

Broken record. He'll play Sunday, but doesn't have the greatest of match-ups with the NFL's No. 1 rated pass D coming to town in Carolina. He would be a WR3 on your fantasy football team at best if you have no other options.

Breaston limited again, but will play Sunday expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited again in practice on Friday, but is listed as probable on the team's injury report and will play on Sunday against the Giants.

Pyro's Take:

This has become a weekly occurrence for Stevie. He's a solid fantasy football play this weekend, especially if Anquan Boldin doesn't go, so make sure you get him in your lineup if you have him.

Breaston limited again on Thursday expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited for the second straight day at practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Do we even need to report this anymore? It's been the same story with the Third Nipple all year, and he keeps playing and producing on Sundays. Start him on your fantasy football team this weekend if you have him.

Breaston limited in practice as usual expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday as usual.

Pyro's Take:

He's been limited all year, yet his stats in games keep climbing. He might get the start this Sunday if Boldin can't go, so be sure to get him in your fantasy football lineup if that happens.

Breaston to start on Sunday if 'Quan can't go expand +

Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin (ankle) did not practice with the team on Wednesday and told the media that “it probably will be a game-time decision (on Sunday).”

Pyro's Take:

Boldin sprained his ankle in the first half last week against Seattle and barely played in the second half. If Boldin can't go, WR Steve Breaston would start and be bumped up to a real nice WR2 fantasy football play on Sunday.

Breaston limited and questionable again expand +

WR Steve Breaston was limited again in practice Friday and will be listed as questionable on the team's injury report for Sunday's game.

Pyro's Take:

Same as it ever was. He'll play and will do just fine as a WR3 for your fantasy football team this week.

Breaston limited again on Thursday expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited again at practice on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Breaston has been getting plenty of rest so he can play on Sundays, and it seems to have been working as he's averaged 81 yards on 5.3 catches the past three games. He's a decent WR3 for your fantasy football team this weekend.

Breaston limited on Wednesday expand +

Cardinals wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) was limited in practice on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

When The Third Nipple gets in the game, he produces, but he's been battling this knee injury of his all year so it's been hard to find the right time to get him into starting fantasy football lineups.
