Thomas Jones

Kansas City Chiefs

2009 Review

If there was a warehouse in this world where you could throw down a chunk of change and pick yourself up a big ol’ satchel of respect, we’d start up the collection bucket right now for Mr. Thomas Jones.  The guys works harder with less respect than Mike Rowe. No matter how well this guy seems to perform, his coaches, or at least his upper-management, never seem to notice or give him the recognition he deserves year after year.  2009 was the pinnacle of Jones’ career, and it seems he’s getting better with age.  He did it all this past year by giving the Jets the best rushing attack in the league while proving to be the biggest “surprise” of the fantasy year.

2010 Fantasy Outlook

Like a broken record, the kid gets no respect.  After putting up the best season of his career and one of the best in Jets franchise history, New York decided to let him sign with the Kansas City Chiefs for the measly price of $5 million over two years.  Granted, Jones topped the 30-year old mark a couple of years ago, but since he has hit his thirties, he’s actually been better than at any other point in his career.  Unfortunately, he’ll be playing second fiddle in 2010 to the newfound talent that is Jamaal Charles.  This will obviously crush his fantasy potential, barring injury to Charles, and he shouldn’t be considered in your fantasy draft until you’ve secured your starting backfield and are willing to take a chance on his handcuff potential.

~ The Chiefs will be starting out with Jamaal Charles in the backfield, thus making Jones a backup in both real and fantasy life

~ He’ll be one of the best handcuffs in the league, and if Charles proves he can’t carry the load, he’ll get his chance to shine again

~ He's proven to be the exception to the 30-year-old running back rule but he can't live that way forever. Or can he...

Contract

The man who gets no respect put up the best year of his career, yet still got no respect on the Free Agency market.  Jones signed a two-year contract with the Chiefs in March of 2009 worth $5 million with another $500,000 available through incentives.  The breakdown of the disrespect is outlined below:

2010 - $3 million

2011 – $2 million

2012 – Free Agent

Jones' travels

We alluded to it before, but here is a more detailed breakdown of how Thomas Jones has been shafted throughout his career despite being drafted 7th overall in 2000.

Skip the first four years of his career when he never caught on with the team that drafted him (Arizona Cardinals) or the team that traded for him but didn’t really use him (Tampa Bay Bucs).  So we fast forward to the years with Da Bears and in comes Ron Turner.  The former University of Illinois head coach establishes an offense in 2005 that plays heavily to Jones’ ability, to which Jones finally had a breakout year with 1,478 total yards and nine touchdowns.

However, for some inexplicable reason, the Bears drafted Cedric Benson 4th overall in 2005.  Why Jerry Angelo thought he could all of the sudden draft running backs with a track record of failing miserably (see Curtis Enis and Rashaan Salaam), we have no idea.  But, he decided to do so, which was the beginning of the end for Jones in Chicago.  Jones even followed up his 2005 season with another 1,300-yard season in ’06, but the Bears were determined to let the world know they didn’t make a mistake by drafting Benson, so they traded Jones to the Jets where he promptly reeled off the best seasons of his career.  And how did Benson do in Chicago?  Well he’s tearing it up in Cincy right now.

But Jones’ travels weren’t done there.  The Jets decided to take Iowa running back Shonn Greene in the 2nd round of the 2008 draft, and with 2 great running backs on the roster, the Jets figured they'd let the older Jones go.  Of course, TJ was promptly picked up by the Chiefs, where he will sit behind Jamaal Charles until he proves he's the better back again.  After recording a 1,400 yard, 14 touchdown season (career bests), he gets rewarded by being shipped to the purgatory of the NFL.  Sorry Thomas, we feel for ya.

Injury Report

Green

Jones may have been a little dinged up towards the end of last season, but the guy is an offseason workout warlord and will be just fine heading into 2010

Breaking News

Thomas Jones returns to practice Thursday expand +

After being held out of practice on Wednesday for rest purposes, Jets running back Thomas Jones (knee) returned to take part in all the team and individual drills on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

The 31-year old back is just fine and will be getting his normal workload against the Chargers this Sunday. Even though their rush D is nothing special, they don't let up many TDs, but the odds still say that Jones will hit paydirt at least once this Sunday. In fact, there were only six games this year in which TJ didn't find the endzone, including last week's playoff game.

Shonn Greene is a legit threat to Thomas Jones's touches expand +

Jets' rookie RB Shonn Greene is challenging Thomas Jones for a larger share of the carries, as Jones was absent from all voluntary off-season activities due to being salty about his contract. Jones did arrive to mandatory camp, and has accepted that his contract is what it is.

Pyro's Take:

Despite their QB woes, the Jets have a strong offensive line and RB Tony Richardson is leading the way for at least one more season. Expect an uptick in carries due to either Sanchez or Clemens under center. If Greene and TJ end up splitting carries with Leon Washington in on 3rd down, there won't be enough to go around. You draft one, you have to draft them all.

Thomas Jones Ready to Go expand +

New York Jets running back Thomas Jones is at camp and ready to put all the contract talk behind him. He reportedly was upset with his current contract, and threatened to hold out if he didn't receiver a new one. However, the Jets stood their ground and Jones is at camp, without that new contract, but ready to work.

Pyro's Take:

This is good news for Jones' owners, as he appears to have matured and realized that a few million dollars (when you already make more than 95% of the world's population) isn't going to make much of a difference. However, with backup running back Leon Washington and rookie Shoon Greene in camp as well, Jones could lose carries to them.
