Trent Edwards

Buffalo Bills

Puppet Master

Recently departed OT Jason Peters had this to say when asked whether the TO-Trent Edwards nuptials will work out this season...

"I think so, because Trent is a listener.  He's going to take it all in.  If TO decides to go fussing, he's not going to be that guy to fuss back and make a big thing.  He's just going to take it all in and go from there."  Courtesy of Buffalobills.com

If Peters is half accurate in his assessment, the Bills are in deep shit.  TO will chew Edwards up by the end of week two.   He will be calling his wife crude names, accusing him of being a trans-sexual, going behind Trent's mom and making banging references:

Give Me-O an inch, he'll take the continent.  Peters is way off in his assessment.  The only way things won't go bad in upstate New York, is if Edwards not only has a pro-bowl year, but TO must be the primary benefactor of his numbers as well.  This is no small order.

CAPTION:  Smiles could be few and far between playing with Colonel Dung pile in '09.

Trent is an above-average athlete with a strong arm and at this point just lacks NFL experience.   He enters his third year in the league with a top five WR tandem in TO and Lee Evans, so while his numbers have been un-interesting through two years, he is a break-out candidate in '09.  Coach Dick Jauron has exactly one year left to make things work in Buffalo and will be doing whatever is necessary to improve Buffalo's 25th ranked offense.

It's not all bad for Buffalo and Trent Edwards.  Wherever TO goes, QB production goes up.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

We did the "well maybe TO has finally grown up" routine three years ago when Dallas signed him.  He was on a winning team with a stud QB, and he still managed to poison the locker-room.  Forgive us if our negativity on him is as apparent as flies on a freshly laid steamer.

That said, TO is only plotting his destruction in year one of a new stay, so Trent has a small window of time to go from dud to stud.  Look for TO to accelerate destruction if Trent is slow to adjust.

Contract

Trent is under contract until 2011.  He'll need to improve in a bunch of areas if he expects a reworked deal at any point.  Here's the breakdown of what's remaining on that deal:

2009 - $460,000

2010 - $550,000

2011 - Free Agent

Injury Report

Yellow

Trent missed a couple of games in 2008 with a groin injury, but has completely healed since then.  TO might scare him to death, so we have to raise the warning level to yellow.

Breaking News

Trent Edwards put on injured reserve expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (ankle) was put on injured reserve Tuesday, thus ending his 2009 NFL season.

Pyro's Take:

One step closer to the world catching a full game glimpse of the bad boy known as Brian Brohm.

Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick out, Brian Brohm in expand +

Bills quarterbacks Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick both suffered ankle injuries in the loss to the Patriots last weekend and are highly unlikely to suit up for the game against the Falcons this week. QB Brian Brohm will get the start in their place if neither can go.

Pyro's Take:

Hmmm... good news or bad news? Brohm is nothing to write home about, but both Edwards and Fitzpatrick are about as bad of a QB tandem as it gets, so pick your poison. Whatever the case, Terrell Owens and Lee Evans take a hit to their fantasy value this upcoming weekend.

Owens, Evans like Fitzpatrick over Edwards expand +

Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens said on Thursday that QB Ryan Fitzpatrick should have remained the starter after the bye, and fellow wideout Lee Evans seconded the statement.
"He has a lot more experience. There are some situations where he'll be able to buy time with that experience. There will be some times where he can assess the defense and really take some shots down the field. We're looking forward to the opportunity with Ryan," said Owens.

Pyro's Take:

Fitzpatrick may have the starting job over Edwards, but that doesn't make him fantasy football material. He's had just two TD passes to four interceptions and a QB rating of 49.8 in the four games he's played in thus far, which hardly makes him a good option in any situation.

Trent Edwards goes into backup role expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards is being benched this weekend in favor of backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrtick according to interim head coach Perry Fewell.

Pyro's Take:

Neither QB is worth having on your fantasy football team at this point.

Trent Edwards back to the bench? expand +

After quarterback Trent Edwards' mistakes and overall performance last week, the Buffalo Bills are expected to go back to QB Ryan Fitzgerald as their starter this Sunday against the Jaguars.

Pyro's Take:

This is like trading a stick of gum for a plastic spider-ring... neither one is worth more than a nickel.
Forget about us even mentioning fantasy football with these two schmoes.

Trent Edwards active and returns to starting role expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) is active and will return to his starting role under center against the Titans today.

Pyro's Take:

He wasn't playable on your fantasy football team before his concussion, and nothing has changed since.

Trent Edwards "officially" named Bills starter again expand +

Buffalo quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) told the media on Wednesday that he was informed he would be the starter for the Bills on Sunday against the Titans.

Pyro's Take:

He's not the greatest option, but he's better than Ryan Fitzpatrick, so he gets the nod. Neither QB is worth starting fantasy football consideration.

Trent Edwards ready to go, expects to be cleared expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) says he feels refreshed and "ready to go" after missing a month due to a head injury. After practicing twice last week, Edwards expects to be cleared by the team to start in Week 10.

Pyro's Take:

He's been practicing with the first unit, so he'll start when he comes back. As for your fantasy football team, we'd suggest holding off that clearance to play for, well, probably the rest of the year.

Trent Edwards will be ready for Week 10 game expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) is expected to be ready to take back his starting job against the Titans when the team returns from their Week 9 bye.

Pyro's Take:

Ryan Fitzpatrick looked more like Ryan Leaf than anything else in his short stint as the Bills starter. Trent hasn't been much better, but he has more fantasy football value than Fitz does for sure.

Trent Edwards inactive as expected expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) is inactive for the game against the Texans today. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in his place.

Pyro's Take:

If Fitzpatrick can put another W up on the board today, Trent may not play another game this year. He wasn't worth much in the world of fantasy football anyway, but if you have him on your team, check the score of this game later and drop him off your team if the Bills win.

Trent Edwards returns to field in limited fashion expand +

Despite coach Dick Jauron already ruling him out for this week's game, Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) returned to practice with the team in a limited fashion on Wednesday.

Pyro's Take:

That's good news as concussions, especially two within a year, are very tough to deal with. He may never win his job back, however, and may be gun-shy even if he does. Don't be afraid to drop him from your fantasy football squad if you still have him.

Trent Edwards will not dress in Week 8 expand +

Bills coach Dick Jauron has already declared quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) out for Sunday's game against the Texans. "Trent will not play this week... that's the proper protocol," said Jauron.

Pyro's Take:

If Ryan Fitzpatrick can get another win this Sunday, Edwards may end up the backup for the rest of the year. Trent was at best an emergency start on your fantasy football team anyway.

Trent Edwards cleared to return to practice expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) was cleared to return to practice according to coach Dick Jauron, but Ryan Fitzpatrick will still be the starter next week as the Bills play it cautious with Edwards' head.

Pyro's Take:

When asked what they'll do once Edwards is completely healthy, Jauron said "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it". Basically, we have a QB controversy in Buffalo, though neither one is worth having on your fantasy football team at this point.

Trent Edwards ruled out for Week 7 expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) did not practice at all this week and has now been ruled out for the Week 7 match-up against the Panthers.

Pyro's Take:

This was an obvious call for the Bills, as Edwards may not be able to play in Week 8 either. Ryan Fitzpatrick now has the keys to the Bills clunker offense, but neither QB is fantasy football material.

Edwards visits with team doctors expand +

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards (concussion) was back at the Bills facility Thursday, but was there to see the team doctors, not to practice. “He’s doing better. He’s feeling better, but he’s not practicing obviously,” coach Dick Jauron said.

Pyro's Take:

Ryan Fitzpatrick took all the first-team reps again today and looks like he'll be the starter on Sunday. Neither he nor Edwards were playable on your fantasy football team regardless.
