Ballard Tears Achilles

Two days into training camp and the Colts already are dealing with their first major injury.

Running back Vick Ballard, only now returning from season-ending knee surgery last September, suffered what team owner Jim Irsay said is a likely torn left Achilles tendon during a non-contact drill Friday. Ballard was set to undergo an MRI Friday night or Saturday morning to confirm the initial diagnosis, made by team medical personnel.

Pyro's take: Ballard missed all of last season after tearing his ACL and now will miss his second straight year with another major injury. While not an elite athlete in the first place it has to hurt his chances of staying in the league for much longer. Ballard was a solid fantasy performer his rookie season when he led the Colts in rushing but has been a non factor recently due to injuries.

The worst part of the injury might be the the mental toll it takes on Ballard after spending the last 12 months battling back in rehab. The carries behind Trent Richardson look to fall solely on the shoulders of Ahmad Bradshaw now, and if Trent runs like he did last season then Bradshaw will be a major factor in leagues this season and should move up your tiers with this news.

Vick Ballard improving

Head coach Chuck Pagano has stated that Vick Ballard (knee) is making progress in his rehab from the torn ACL he suffered in practice last September.

Pyro's take: Ballard might be counted on heavily, especially if Trent Richardson keeps playing like a slab of concrete. Vick was considered number one on the depth chart, coming into the 2013 season, and his injury was a main factor the Colts traded for Richardson. If he can continue to get healthy, he can be a nice sleeper pick in many drafts.

Vick Ballard out for the season

The Indianapolis Colts have lost starting running back Vick Ballard for the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

Coach Chuck Pagano said Ballard suffered a freak accident at practice. It was a non-contact injury. "We feel awful for Vick," Pagano said. "We'll deal with it. No one handles adversity like us."

Pyro's take: This is rough news for the second year back, but good news for Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw will take over as the lead back and Donald Brown will move into the backup role. Bradshaw should see the majority of the carries, and Brown is not a recommended pick up. This could also be good news for owners of Andrew Luck, Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton as the Colts may have to lean on the passing game more.
