Willie Parker

Washington Redskins

Wrong Place, Wrong Time

He was undrafted coming out of North Carolina back in ‘04 for a reason.  Not because he wasn’t any good, but because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  After Willie’s freshman year at the University of North Carolina, there was a coaching change; John Bunting took over as head coach of the Tarheels and brought with him an offense that emphasized a power running game over speed.  Willie Parker’s game is very much the latter.  In 2004 at NC’s “Pro Day”, he was clocked at 4.23 seconds in the 40-yard dash.  Willie was never able to buy in to the new coach’s philosophy and therefore never saw enough carries in his final three years to turn scout’s heads.

Again?

If that explains why he was undrafted, it does not explain why his numbers seem to be getting worse the last two years.  A quick look at his rushing average per carry shows steady decreases since he entered the league.  He had a dominant fantasy year in 2006 but has trailed off in almost all categories since then.  We will chalk part of his 2008 issues up to what happened to their offensive line.  Pittsburgh headed into 2008 with three new starters, and then lost one of their two familiar faces, OG Kendall Simmons for the season in week four.  They then lost new-comer OLT Max Starks for five games.  The line was a mess.  But Willie’s issues are larger in scope than the o-line’s struggles.

Mike Tomlin was hired in 2007 and, in short, has a similar philosophy to running the ball as Parker’s college coach, John Bunting.  Willie is one-dimensional - speed.  He’s a blazer and is willing to take a hit for extra yards, but the “pros” sort of stop there.  He has been criticized for having poor field vision (runs very north/south), is only an average receiver out of the backfield, is ineffective in short yardage situations, and is barely an average pass blocker.  These all come together to severely limit the number of touches he sees on third downs and inside the five yard stripe.  It’s very difficult to be fantasy-relevant as a RB if you aren’t the goal line guy and/or catching a lot of balls out of the backfield on third downs.

2009 Fantasy Outlook

The offensive line struggles should be helped by the fact that they return all five starters from last year.  Chemistry is key on the line, and a year together will benefit them.  That said, Willie is tough to get excited about.  You would think that the starting RB on a team like the Steelers would be a lock to grind out yards and TDs.  It’s just not the case with “Fast Willie”.  If you draft this guy keep your expectations way low and then you can’t be let down too badly.  You must ignore the year he had in ’06 when he went ballistic for 1,716 total yards and 16 total TDs because that was pre-Mike Tomlin.  He is the one that removed Parker from many of the third down and goal-line opportunities.  One thing in Parker owner’s favor is that he is entering the final year in his contract and has received no overtures for an extension.  See more below, but this should be a factor if you find yourself torn between him and another backup fantasy RB on your cheat sheet.  Fast Willie should be a top fantasy backup RB which makes him the 79th RB selected in ’09.

Contract

Fast Willie signed himself a four-year, $13.6 million contract right before the 2006 season that included a $3.75 million signing bonus and another $4.5 million in possible incentives.  He severely outplayed the contract that year, but has declined in production every year since.  2009 presents itself as the final year of that deal, so if he plans on hitting the big pay-day next off-season, he’d better find himself a nice seat back in the tape-room and figure it all out, because with Pittsburgh having Mendenhall in the mix, you can be sure that he won’t be seeing an extension of any kind during the year.

Handcuff

Rashard Mendenhall - RaMen enters his sophomore year after having missed most of last season with a fractured shoulder, but is a talented RB and brings a more well-rounded game than Willie.  You should plan a mid to late round draft pick to lock him down if you end up drafting Willie.  If you find yourself dis-interested in the remaining field of players by the very last round, and your league affords you extra rosters spots, you may as well also nab Mewelde Moore.  This is one of two situations where you may double-backup a non-starting RB (the Patriots muddled backfield being the other).

Injury Report

Yellow

Parker suffered through an injury-plagued season in 2008. He missed five games with a knee injury early on, then dealt with a torn labrum in his shoulder later in the season. He played through the pain in December and on into the playoffs, but he is one of the smaller RBs in the league and the injuries He worked hard in the off-season doing Pilates and such and has said he feels 100% fine, but we’re a little leery of the wear and tear on him so draft him with a slight bit of caution.

Breaking News

Parker gets zero touches Monday night expand +

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall went off for 155 yards on 22 carries while catching one pass for 9 yards against the Broncos Monday night. At the same time, Willie Parker (turf toe) got into game for just one play and did not touch the ball.

Pyro's Take:

Rashard Mendenhall has strengthened his grip on the starting job more and more each game, while Fast Willie P. has pretty much been phased out of the offense completely. Mendenhall has become one of the elite fantasy football RBs over the past six weeks, and you should have no problem using him as such on your team for the rest of the year.

Parker's turf toe almost completely healed expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker (turf toe) said on Thursday that he's thinking about losing the protective shoe he's been wearing because his toe has healed so well.

Pyro's Take:

Not that it will matter, Willie. You've already lost your starting job on both the Steelers and fantasy football teams alike and aren't likely to get them back anytime soon with Rashard Mendenhall producing the way he is.

Willie missed Monday practice due to illness expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker (turf toe) showed up for practice on Monday, but was sent home by coach Mike Tomlin because he was obviously sick. Tomlin also said that Willie is in no danger of missing the Monday night game against the Broncos.

Pyro's Take:

In case you haven't noticed, there is quite a large bug floating around the NFL this year, sometimes keeping full teams from practicing on certain days. Willie should be fine, but he's still not worth a fantasy football play this weekend.

Parker skips practice on Monday expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker (turf toe) missed practice with the team on Monday.

Pyro's Take:

Turf toe can be a very painful injury, so the team is likely just resting him instead of taking the chance at aggravating the situation. His fantasy football value is slowly swirling it's way down the toilet right now anyway.

Parker's turf toe causing swelling expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker is experiencing some swelling in his foot due to his turf toe injury.
"I'm starting to plant, cut and do all that stuff because it's starting to heal up," Parker said Thursday. "It's still swollen, but it's getting a lot better. This week is the best that it's been."

Pyro's Take:

Turf toe has been known to end careers, or at least hinder them in some way. Hall of Fame LB Jack Lambert was as tough as they come, but his career was put to an end because of it.
Parker is not even a flex play on your fantasy football team right now.

Willie Parker still battling turf toe expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker is still having problems with his turf toe injury. "I'm not all the way back," said Parker. "I'm not Willie Parker, I'm not myself right now."

Pyro's Take:

FWP (Fast Willie Parker) is nowhere close to the FWP of old right now, and coach Mike Tomlin knows it. Parker can barely be used as a flex play on your fantasy football team right now.

Willie Parker moves down the depth chart expand +

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said at his weekly press conference that running back Rashard Mendenhall has indeed passed Willie Parker on the team's RB depth chart.
"It's great to have Willie back," Tomlin said, "but Rashard has the hot hand if you will."

Pyro's Take:

Thanks for confirming what the fantasy football world has known for a couple of weeks now Mike. Mendenhall is a great RB2 play each week, while Parker has been relegated to an iffy flex play for your team.

Willie to take a back-seat upon his return expand +

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall will be getting the start in the backfield over Willie Parker in the game against the Browns today.

Pyro's Take:

Why in the world this was ever a question is beyond us. His skill-set is infinitely better than Parker's, and Rashard should be a great fantasy football option for you this week.

Parker to be active on Sunday expand +

RB Willie Parker (turf toe) will be active against the Browns on Sunday but is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup again by Rashard Mendenhall.

Pyro's Take:

Parker is losing fantasy football value weekly at this point and can, at best, be used as a flex play this week.

Steelers won't decide RB distribution until game time expand +

With Willie Parker (turf toe) practicing in full the past two days and Rashard Mendenhall missing Thursday's practice with flu-like symptoms, Steelers OC Bruce Arians said that the majority of the carries Sunday won’t be decided until game time.

Pyro's Take:

It just shocks the shit out of us that Arians can be so wishy-washy on this call. If Mendenhall is healthy, he's clearly the better back and a much better fantasy football play as well.

Willie Parker to wear special shoe while playing expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker (turf toe) will begin wearing a special shoe in practice and in games in order to protect the injured toe on his left foot.

Pyro's Take:

Willie's game has always been based on speed, so having an injury that takes away from the only part of his game that was worth anything dropped his fantasy football value to being a flex play at best.

Willie Parker expected back for Week 6 game expand +

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said that running back Willie Parker will practice on Wednesday and that he is very interested in seeing how he responds to the work on Thursday.

Pyro's Take:

Last week, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said that Parker is still the starter on the team, but he'd have to be a moron not to give Rashard Mendenhall the bulk of the carries. Without a doubt, Mendenhall is the one with fantasy football value at this point.

Parker inactive, Mendenhall to start once again expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker has been declared inactive for the game against the Lions today. Rashard Mendenhall will get the start in Parker's place.

Pyro's Take:

No surprise here, and even if Parker was healthy and active, Mendenhall should be getting the starts now anyway. Feel free to throw Rashard into your fantasy football lineup for his favorable match-up against the decrepit Lions.

Willie Parker to sit one more week expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker (turf toe) did not practice again on Friday and will not suit up for the game against the Lions on Sunday. Rashard Mendenhall will start once more for the injured Parker.

Pyro's Take:

Parker hasn't been able to practice for awhile now, though he says that he'll probably be able to return in Week 6. Mendenhall is now a really nice fantasy football starter in Week 5.

Willie Parker misses practice again expand +

Steelers running back Willie Parker (turf toe) missed practice again on Thursday and doesn't look like he will play this Sunday against the Lions.

Pyro's Take:

Turf toe is a lot more painful of an injury than it sounds, so we wouldn't be surprised to see Parker out at least another week past Sunday. Keep him buried on your fantasy football bench.
