TOTAL FANTASY POINTS PER GAME SCORED BY NFL TEAM OFFENSES
The Lions offense has really been clicking on all cylinders as of late and it has coincided with Megatron’s transformation into last seasons form. Mikel Leshoure has also been a hammer in the redzone in recent weeks, as he has scored 6 touchdowns in the last five games. This offense isn’t without its faults though as Ryan Broyles and Titus Young joined Nate Burleson on IR so they must find a receiver to step in and fill the void as the second pass catcher behind Megatron. As of now the Lions aren’t top five in any category but they are on the cusp in the QB and WR department.
The Panthers Offense has been on a climb in recent weeks as Cam Newton has begun to look like he is breaking out of his sophomore slump. On Sunday they were beaten by the lowly Chiefs but it was no fault of Cam’s as he was efficient with his arm, 15 of 27 for 232 and 3 scores, and legs, 7 rushes for 78 yards. With his performance in recent weeks he has climbed into a tie for 3rd ahead of notable quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning. The running game was also efficient for the first time in what feels like all season, averaging 7.5 yards a carry if you include Cam. This offense still has a lot of work to do to take that next step in becoming a top 10 offensive unit.
The Dallas Cowboys and the Indianapolis Colts both jumped 4 spots in our rankings this week as they both got into shoot outs. The Cowboys came up victorious against the Eagles 38-33 led by the Romo to Bryant connection and the return of Demarco Murray from injury. With Murray back in the lineup the Cowboys were a lot more balanced as Romo only attempted 27 passes. The Colts however were not as balanced as Andrew Luck attempted 54 passes to only 18 runs. The Colts are in desperate need of a running back to step up and take over the job in order to take this offense to the next level as the 5th worst production from the running backs just isn’t cutting it.
The Redskins and Chargers each fell three spots in the rankings but with much different results. The Chargers failed to score a touchdown yet again this season and look helpless most of the time, especially in the redzone. Antonio Gates hasn’t been much of a factor, Ryan Mathews continues to disappoint, and Philip Rivers looks colorblind as he has thrown 48 interceptions in his last 48 games. The “offensive guru” that apparently is Norv Turner leaves much to be desired and the only thing good that can come out of this season now is his firing. The Redskins however slowed the game down and did just enough to secure a victory. RG3 didn’t put up mind blowing numbers but he was efficient threw the air going 13 of 21 for 163 yards and a score and electric with his legs averaging 14.4 YPC on his 5 rushing attempts. Alfred Morris was the bell cow churning his 22 carries into 124 yards as the Redskins defeated the Giants on Monday Night to inch closer to the playoffs.
TOTAL FANTASY POINTS PER GAME ALLOWED BY NFL TEAM DEFENSES
The Atlanta Falcons turned in a valiant defensive effort as the held the second best offensive unit in check to the tune of 13 points. The Falcons were flying for revenge against the Saints, the only team to defeat them this season, and the defense did more than enough to get it on a night the offense was not clicking on all cylinders. The falcons defensive backs were able to force drew Brees into 5 interceptions without notable ballhawk Asante Samuel on the field for most of the game. When the Falcons defense can play like this they are an incredibly tough team to beat.
The Dallas Cowboys defense got torched by a pair of rookies, one in particular who has set the world on fire in Bryce Brown and another who is under a lot of scrutiny. Brown had another impressive day tallying 183 total yards and 2 scores. Nick Foles finally worked the ball down the field a bit more than in past games and was able to amass 251 passing yards and a score. If not for a big fumble recovery and score by rookie Morris Claiborne who knows how this game might have ended.
The Jets defense has had quite the roller coaster ride over the last two weeks. After being demolished by the Tom Brady led Patriots on Thanksgiving the defense was able to breathe a sigh of relief when the worst ranked offense came to town. Ryan Lindley is somehow still starting and the Jets defense licked their chops allowing him to complete under 33% of his passes for a ghastly 2.3 YPA and an INT. The defense was able to hold the entire Cardinals offense to just 137 yards and 2.5 yards per play. Luckily for fans of the NFL with the way this game went they didn’t pop up on your redzone channel very often. This dominating defensive performance allowed the Jets to jump a cool 10 spots in the points allowed ranking this week.
The Lions defense continues to fall as they have to face some of the best quarterbacks in the league. Andrew Luck did his best Peyton manning impression to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on a day in which he threw 3 INT’s. The bad for the Lions however was he was able to throw for 391 yards and 4 scores and get everyone from LaVon Brazil to Donnie Avery involved. He also threw effectively to his two tight ends that were able to compile 3 catches for 76 yards and a score. The Lions might have an elite offense but their defense is overrated and they continue to fall. This week the Lions fell 6 spots all the way to 20th.
THE DIFFERENTIAL FOR OFFENSIVE FANTASY POINTS SCORED
VS. FANTASY POINTS ALLOWED BY THE DEFENSE
Last week if you would have used this chart to pick your games you would have gone 10-6. It does pretty well when looking at the top of the rankings but when a few teams that are bad get in a battle (i.e. Jets and Cardinals) it isn’t perfect. Only one game that was picked wrong might be considered a monumental upset and that is the 49ers falling to the Rams in OT, but as we all know divisional games are just tough to predict as they are always closer than the talent levels of each team might dictate because of familiarity.
As the weeks have gone on there is less and less movement in the differential chart. The teams at the top look like the cream of the crop in the NFL and the teams at the bottom are all fighting for scraps against each other. The biggest movers this week were only able to move up or down two spots. The more games that are played the more idea we have an idea of a team such as the Giants who are losing their grip on the reigns of the NFC East.
The two biggest gainers this week each made big strides in their quest for a playoff berth. The Bengals have been on fire since their bye week and the Colts are looking tougher and tougher to beat as the weeks go by and Andrew Luck gets more snaps. These two young single callers have been making strides all season long and when the playoffs come around they will be tough outs as no team will be vying to play them.
The biggest fallers this week were the Detroit Lions and the Arizona Cardinals. The Lions defense has been playing weaker just as their offense has been picking up their play. The Arizona Cardinals have really been reeling since starting the season as one of the biggest surprises in the league and it all comes down to quarterback play. Ryan Lindley is flat out overmatched so bad that he makes Kevin Kolb and John Skelton look like a hall of famers.
